Lia Astraia is the main protagonist of Bewilthred. Compassionate, adventurous and happy to take charge, itâs no wonder sheâs the leader of The Warriors of Peace! Though her position as leader wasnât her decision, she strives to live up to what has been expected of her, hoping that she and her friends can help pave a better future with their efforts. After all, making the world a better place has been her dream since she was a child, so no matter the problems ahead, she promises to power through! For her friends, for her family, and for even the universe itself.
But not all is as it seems. Something is cracking beneath the outgoing girlâs surface. Does she really mean it when she says sheâs alright? Or is that just a facade under the overwhelming pressures placed upon her? Everyone had expected great things from her since birth, that much is true, but with thousands of lives now in her handsâŚhow many burdens can one person take? Though she puts up a front that everything is fine, day by day, something is evidently very wrong.
Though, sheâs not going to worry about that for now.
She canât let anyone down. Not now. Not ever. This is her destiny.
Or at leastâŚit has to be, right?

The âAstraiaâ surname has always carried an air of prestige. The Astraia family has had a long line of successful descendants, from lawyers, doctors, scientists and more. As a result, high expectations are placed on all future children to maintain the legacy built centuries before they were even born.
They are told from the moment they are conceived that in due time, they will grow up to shine like âthe stars they areâ. Whether or not the children actually want to pursue this, though, is often overlooked entirely in favor of appearances and keeping up a name that is older than most of its members combined. It is no wonder then, that in practically all of Lia and Nateâs parents' teachings, the same sentiment always arose. âAlways do your best to shine, no matter how much you have to burn to do so.â
With these factors in mind, itâs not really a surprise to know that when the time came for their parents to âpass downâ the legacy by having a child, they obliged the best they could. Itâs a tradition in the family to keep as much information possible secret until the baby is actually born. As a result, Lia and Nateâs parents were not prepared or informed in advance for what was to come.
While the specifics cannot be delved into due to spoilers, the circumstances of the Astraia twinâs birth led to someâŚinteresting decision making by their parents on how to raise them. When Lia was born, she was viewed as a âprizeâ, a âtrophyâ. From the moment she was born, her parents were already thinking of what sheâd become. Nate, in contrast, always came secondary. He was attached to Lia by the hip and became extremely protective of her. Essentially, he took up the job of taking care of her when their parents couldnât. Additionally, his abrasive personality put off those who did try to care for the two, as he wouldnât trust anyone around his sister, not even their own parents. The two were inseparable from one another, and their parents knew it very well.
As their parents ranked up in their positions at work, they often moved around. Their huge focus on work kept both of them from regularly interacting with their children. Their parents, especially their mother, were chronic overworkers, constantly spending long days away from them and leaving other people to take care of them while they were away. This led to the two twins getting even closer, as they quite literally only had one another most of the time. The constant fluctuation in their life, from where they lived, to whether or not their parents would be present led to the two basically relying on each other in their childhood.
However, Lia remained optimistic that one day, their parents would settle down and spend time with them like a normal family. She held onto the hope that eventually, the idea of the perfect family they worked so hard to portray to everyone around them would become a reality. Maybe, if she pushed herself a little harder, if she fulfilled what they wanted, things could be next to something normal. Nate, however, was never optimistic about anything in regards to their parents, he knew deep down that unless their parents put in the effort to change to accommodate for them too, it was unlikely the two were going to get any sense of ânormalcyâ anytime soon.
Time ticked by. Years would pass and the cycle would remain the same. Move, settle in, get just comfortable enough, and then be forced to restart. As the twins both got older, Liaâs pipedream became even more unrealistic as the twinâs parents took multiple job opportunities farther away, meaning theyâd have to go months without regularly seeing their children in person. This, to their parents, was a natural development in their life, but to most sane individuals this is a level of isolation and borderline neglect that unsurprisingly informed how the Astraia twins felt about each other and themselves.
No matter if their parents âsupportedâ them financially or were giving them a roof under their head, it was obvious that alone wasnât going to pull the two through everything they needed. This is why Nate, whoâd already been taking up a role of protector and caretaker since the two were small, saw himself as the only one who could work to maintain any illusion of stability. He took it upon himself to keep the two together at any cost. As a result, he threw himself into studying, exam preparation, anything that could help propel them out of the situation they were in. He ran errands, he did most of the house chores, he did the shopping. When he was old enough, he got his drivers license, and right before the events of the main story, Nate was already applying for part-time jobs.
Youâd think Lia would notice this imbalance, and to a degree she does. Though itâs important to consider, Nate refuses to let burden any responsibility for their upbringing. In his eyes, she was already dealing with so much considering her parents' desires for what they wanted her to be. After all, to Nate, Lia is his primary reason to exist truly, so he doesnât care about the sacrifices he has to make for her sake. Though, that doesnât stop Lia from feeling indebted to her brother for essentially becoming her caregiver. The complications of their upbringing hurt both of them deeply, leaving one forced to be a protector and provider in the face of adversity and the other constantly paranoid of slipping from the strict and sharp expectation of her entire family.
The Astraia twins live a complicated life. But despite it all, they still promise to stay by one another. They still have each other, at the end of the day, and for now, theyâre both convinced thatâs all they need to keep marching onâŚ

ââ â ââ â ââ â ââ
By the time Bewilthredâs story begins, Nate and Lia had just moved into yet another new home. Dealing with a new house, a new school district, and yet another âhouse warmingâ party was nothing new for the two, theyâd cycled through this many times before. As rumors floated of a âGreat Shakeâ spreading across the world, Lia suggested the two take one venture into the woods to get their minds off thingsâŚ
What theyâd find there, however, wouldnât be what theyâd expect. Stumbling upon a universal rift, the two became both fascinated and confusedâŚ
âŚand they both immediately fell inside.
Long story short, due to a series of mishaps, the two stumble upon a garden on another planet named âQuescilliaâ and meet five other teenagers just like them. Together, they meet Peace, the Keeper of Peace and Order. The seven of them are told they are part of a prophecy which says that one day seven warriors all from rifts would unite to save their universe from a rising galactic threat known as Omne, and learn that they just might be the last hope in stopping said threat from taking over the world as we know it. Peace assigns them her second in command, Hanabi to help guide them throughout their journeyâŚand later assigns Lia the role of leader within the group.
Initially, Lia is fine with taking up the role and doesnât plan to take it too seriously. She views this new âwarriorâ group as a way to fulfill her purpose. For now, she wonât let it get to her too muchâŚat least, she hopes.
Despite that, however, the group strives to do their best. Together as The Warriors of Peace (Or The WOP for short), they swear to always come out on top, and become who theyâre meant to beâŚno matter who or what stands in their way.
Letâs just hope their efforts arenât completely in vainâŚthe universe depends on it.
"Think it's safe to say your savior doesn't look a thing like me!"
| đą Introduction
ââ â ââ â ââ â ââ
On first impression, Lia is outgoing, kind, and leaderly. With her always being the first to lend a helping hand, itâs rare for her to get on anyoneâs bad side. She lives for adventure and the thrill of exploring the beyond, usually willing to push the limits to have a little bit of fun with those she loves. After all, experience is how she commonly bonds with those she cares about.
Many find that Lia thrives off the feelings of others. When her friends are happy, she is happy, so she does her best to maintain that stability within her circles. She is without a doubt a natural leader by default, with most people turning to her first in times of guidance. Lia is also set on being a peacekeeper. The last thing she wants is conflict, and she will take most measures to resolve issues peacefully before jumping into any sort of hostility.
In relation, Lia carries a noticeable tendency of pushing away any sort of emotional processing, attaching an âeverything is fineâ label on issues hoping to resolve them later. This constant repression of worry, although seemingly harmless at first glance, stacks once she starts pushing more serious matters aside. Along with that, she often prioritizes the stability of others much more than her own, often leading her to neglect or push herself too far if it means keeping the people around her functioning.
Although she is a good leader, the pressure of such often goes to her head, making her feel as if the world will crash around her if she makes even a small mistake. Sheâs afraid of letting those around her down, and wants to do her best to live up to the idealized version of herself she believes people see of her. Failure is one of her worst fears, as she doesnât want to let the trust others put in her go to waste. She wants to prove they werenât wrong in depending on her for help.
Most of Liaâs key points of learning throughout the story is coming to terms with how others' expectations have informed her sense of self. Liaâs whole life has been shaped by what others want of her, and throughout her journey she has to not only learn to understand what is and isnât fair to expect of herself, but how to separate her identity from solely being based in others perceptions or ideas. In order to be a good leader, she must prioritize and see the value in herself. Otherwise, she will flounder under the pressure and end up not listening to what she should really hear. To stay a leader and prevent herself from being a martyr, Lia must learn not only to accept her own mistakes and flaws that will inevitably come, but also that she is inherently human and is deserving of compassion and respect regardless of her âfailingâ to live up to expectation.
| đą ACT 1
ââ â ââ â ââ â ââ
Liaâs initial personality in Act 1 isnât very different from what her introduction has established. Lia starts out the story a lot more naive and impulsive however. She often throws herself into reckless scenarios in order to fulfill her role as âleaderâ, something her friends and Nate especially greatly worry about.
Liaâs main learning point in Act 1 is coming to terms with the gravity of the situation they are in, and the expectation that is coming with it. Lia starts out using being the leader of the WOP as a set âpurposeâ for her. Sheâs always wanted to help people in some way, and with the addition of finally living up to her parentâs standards, the position of leader seems like a dream come true. Though, the reality of the situation doesnât really hit her (or any of the members of the WOP) until later on.
Most of the comedy that derives from Act 1 Lia is her very, uh, confused nature. Lia is a little over her head in most cases, and admittedly a bit oblivious. She often finds herself trying to comprehend half of the new tasks and ideas being sprouted at her. Sheâs doing the best she can, but it is admittedly a little funny to watch her fumble about a little trying to wrap her head around half of the new universal truths and responsibilities sheâs learning about.
Liaâs outgoing and compassionate demeanor also leads to her being more forgiving to potential foes, such as the WOPâs most regular foe, The Spy. Spy, being an Omne captor who the gang encounter on one of their very first missions, forms a deep rivalry with the WOP, and especially festers a deep jealousy towards Lia. Spy takes their status as âsworn enemiesâ incredibly seriouslyâŚLia however does not. The relationship between the two isâŚcomplicated, but Lia does respect Spy and wants him to be a better person. She canât help but feel there is more to him than meets the eye. If sheâs going to help anyone, sheâd like to at least help him realize the people heâs working for arenât always working for his or others' favor. If she could do that much, then maybe she wouldâve found a reason to have come all the way out here after allâŚ

Sheâs the first real OC Iâve ever made, and the first character ever made for the Bewilthredverse.
In the original Bewilthred plot outline (way back in 2017 mind you), she was planned to be a lumberjack. Itâs part of why her weapon is a battle ax to this day.
In the original Bewilthred plot outline (...again back in 2017), she had a pet fennec fox named Emy. Said Fennec fox has been eliminated from the aether but it's okayâŚyou can actually check her out here! Donât ask why sheâs a furry. 11 year olds donât make very good story decisions unfortunately.
Lia originally had a sister! Not a brother. Weird alternate universe I guess.
She eats raw potatoes when stressed. Hey, we all need a way to cope right.
Her symbol (Cross) is a medical cross, not a religious one.
She and Nate are fraternal twins, which is why they donât look super similar despite being twins. Specifically, Lia takes more after their dad (Liam), and Nate takes more after their mom (Natalie).
Lia is actually the older Astraia twin by a minute or so.
