| ♠️ Introduction
── ⋅ ── ♤ ── ⋅ ──
Kai Liu is one of the deuteragonists in Bewilthred. Laid-back, unpredictable, and a self-proclaimed “master of comedy”, chaos follows wherever Kai goes. He’s the comic relief amongst the Warriors. Cracking jokes and coming up with terrible puns even in the face of danger is his specialty, and he’s infamous for his sporadic endeavors complimented by quick bouts of creativity that allow him to come up with unconventional but useful ways to combat the Warrior’s problems.
However, Kai’s humorous demeanor is often a mask. Due to his troubles at school academically and socially, Kai has learnt that in order to keep his friends, he has to keep up this “funny guy” act. He fears that he has no value besides how he can entertain and will be abandoned if he can’t maintain that persona. With none of his creative talents being valued during his time on Armonia, it’s no wonder he believes his comedy is the only thing that people look to him for.
Even with the Warriors, he can’t help but wonder…
…The moment he stops being entertaining to them, will they leave him behind?
…Is that all they really want him for?
…Is that all he can offer at all?
He’d rather not think about that. In fact, he’d prefer to play it off like another one of his jokes. As long as he can keep this up, he can stay. But if they do end up leaving him behind…
…He just hopes that they won’t have the last laugh.

Warnings: Child Abandonment, Teacher-Student Abuse, Ableism (Implied)
── ⋅ ── ♤ ── ⋅ ──
All Armonian’s start out as abandoned children. It’s a sad, but true fact. It’s one of the many similarities they share with their “competitor”, Congeria, the planet that raises Omne recruits. However, unlike Congeria/Omne’s more militaristic approach, Armonia has always sought to help those in their care prepare themselves to become valuable members of society. It functions more as a traditional orphanage, complete with its own inner schooling and “Caretakers” hired to ensure every child makes substantial progress in their learning.
The exact details of how Kai ended up on Armonia is something not even he knows very well. Only having his muddled memories and the whispers of the Caretaker’s to go off of, he could only assume that whoever was caring for him followed the same storyline as every other person there. A parent had a child, but as time passes they become unable to care for them. Eventually, they are confronted by an Armonian official…given an ultimatum…and…
…And Kai could assume the rest. He didn’t need to know any more than that.
Kai grew up on Armonia knowing something about him was…different. The way The Caretakers treated him told him enough. He was never “skilled” academically. He was “at best” a straight C student who could barely focus on one task at a time. Though he tried to do his best to keep up to meet the high cut-off’s many were expecting him to, whenever he looked at any test, any quiz, hell, any assignment period, it was like his brain would fill up with static.
Kai’s struggles in school were viewed as intentional instead of incidental. Many of The Caretakers assumed his faltering grades were due to carelessness. They believed he “wasn’t putting in the effort”, that he was “slacking off”, was “lazy”, or at worst, purposefully “stupid”. These implicit, but still detectable assertions left a heavy mark on how Kai viewed himself and his own intelligence. If nobody was ever going to give him a chance, then why should he try? He started to think that maybe he was always destined to be a failure, no matter how hard he tried to prove otherwise.
However, what many of The Caretaker’s failed to account for when it came to Kai was his creativity. Although Kai couldn’t focus on, say, a complicated math problem, he was constantly picking up small creative endeavors to do instead. He knew how to make origami, he made miniatures, and when some of his fellow students were in a tricky situation, he somehow always knew how to find a way out of it. It’s obvious to those who observe closely that Kai’s talents easily stack on one another, proving his idea of being a “failure” is rooted in nothing but an outsiders bias and preconceived notions of how a person should be, but that isn’t even mentioning Kai’s most abundantly obvious talent of all.
Kai is inherently extroverted. He has the ability of striking up a conversation with just about anyone about anything. His creativity mixed with his conversational skills only improved this, as he could use his quick wit to make a joke and entertain whoever he hung around. Over time, Kai’s outgoing and social nature drew more and more people around him. His popularity with those on Armonia only heightened when he used his comedic antics during class time.
Kai quickly became a bit of a “troublemaker” at school. He was the traditional class clown in class, always poking fun at the teacher looking for a reaction from either them or the students surrounding him. The Caretaker’s never respected him for it, but in all fairness, it wasn’t like they respected him prior. And besides, what’s a harmless little tease every now and then? It wasn’t like any of his comments came entirely unwarranted…
…However, entertainment can only last for so long. Eventually, people get bored and find other things to keep them occupied. People will get sick of the same old show, and they leave you behind.
Leave you behind…
No, no! He couldn’t be left behind. He would find a way. He’d find another joke, another prank, something else to keep them coming back. He wouldn’t let himself lose this, he didn’t have anything else to lose…
As time passed, Kai embraced this humorous act. He bounced from friend group to friend group, trying to find a place to settle in, but the same cycle presented itself. Find a new group, settle in, stay to entertain for a while…until they get sick of you and leave. Again, and again, and again…
The more people Kai cycled through, the more tense he got. With every new beginning came unspoken terms, terms that told him his time here was temporary, that the moment he stopped being able to perform, he would be discarded again. Like the time before, and the next, nothing ever seemed to change…
Maybe this was all he was good for…
But, he was already in too deep. Kai was used to the cycle of being picked up and thrown away by now. It was his life. It was how things were meant to be…
…He supposed that’s why, when the opportunity presented itself, he tried to get yet another group's favor. One he’d actually been fond of for a long time. It wouldn’t hurt to try, would it?
He just hoped he wouldn’t regret it.
| ♠️ Act 1
── ⋅ ── ♤ ── ⋅ ──
By the time Bewilthred’s story begins, Kai had tried to join yet another friend group. Specifically, a friend group he’d been interested in for a long time. During a field trip to The Reaper’s Ruin’s, Kai joined the group’s gossip of a Great Shake overtaking the universe on a planetary scale to try and warm up to them. However, like many of his previous attempts, it would take something more to gain their respect.
As the field trip progressed, Kai ramped up his antics and only got in more and more trouble with the group’s assigned Caretaker. Even with his attempts at more friendly conversation, the group only seemed interested whenever Kai did something to get himself in trouble. Even more so, when Kai tried to do anything to talk about something he liked, he was quickly shut out and forgotten. Maybe this time, things would end even faster than they usually do.
Then again, though, what was he supposed to expect? Things like this were bound to happen eventually. It was inevitable he wasn’t ever going to have real friends.
Unless he had something new to provide, he was going to be stuck alone once more.
As Kai sulked, left out and defeated, he noticed the same group trying to sneak into a restricted construction area. Kai’s problem solving could easily help…so when they asked…
…He provided it, and immediately, the group’s attitude towards him changed. Suddenly, he was being respected, paid attention to, people actually responded back when he talked. He and the rest of the friend group messed around in the area, getting up to usual shenanigans you’d expect teenagers to get into in a place they’re not supposed to be. Things were perfect, finally, he had a place to belong after all!
Until Caretaker caught them.
The moment she did, the same group who had suddenly grown fond of him threw him under the bus. They blamed everything on him and claimed it was all his idea, which was inherently untrue, but it wasn’t like any Caretaker would listen to him anyways. So, despite his protests, Kai was taken away and received a firm lecture for his behavior. That wasn’t out of the ordinary for him, he was used to being punished like this, however his Caretaker had more than just a lecture in mind.
As she rambled on, she noted Kai’s repeated “misdemeanors”. Constantly being a disturbance in class, his lack of focus and attention, his faltering grades…she felt the only way to “correct” him was to take away the thing “distracting” him entirely. Kai wasn’t only going to be lectured, oh no, he was being removed from Armonia’s main sector entirely. He would be placed in a different area, void of any other people, and forced to do nothing but work until he “got himself together” by the end of the semester. Maybe then he wouldn’t be such a “nuisance” to The Caretaker’s.
…He was going to be alone for six months. Away from any of the people he knew, away from the only thing that made him happy. Worst of all, all of that would be replaced with him being forced to do the one thing he dreaded more than anything in the world.
As Caretaker left him alone to sit with this horrific new development, Kai couldn’t help but feel despair. Not even his own humor could cheer him up in the face of something that could completely throw a wrench in what was keeping him afloat for so long. He supposed that’s why, when he saw a glowing light in the distance, he couldn’t stop himself from following it…
…After stumbling around in the jungle-like forest of The Reaper’s Ruin’s, he stumbled upon a “space portal”. A universal rift…
…He didn’t have anything left to lose, so why not take a look inside?
Shortly after taking a look into the rift, Kai had an unceremonious fall inside and ended up in a garden on another planet named “Quescillia” and met six other teenagers just like him. Together, they meet Peace, the Keeper of Peace and manager of order in the universe. The seven of them are told they are part of a prophecy which says that one day seven warriors all from rifts would unite to save their universe from a rising galactic threat known as Omne, and learn that they just might be the last hope in stopping said threat from taking over the world as we know it. Peace assigns them her second in command, Hanabi to help guide them throughout their journey.
Despite their strange coming together, the group strives to do their best. Together as The Warriors of Peace (Or The WOP for short), they swear to always come out on top, and become who they’re meant to be…no matter who or what stands in their way.
Let’s just hope their efforts aren’t completely in vain…the universe depends on it.
"These friends, they don't love you! They just love the hotel suites now!"
| 🧨 Introduction
── ⋅ ── ♤ ── ⋅ ──
On first impression, Kai is laid-back, charismatic, and unpredictable. He’s also inherently comedic and loves to prod, poke, and tease to get a reaction out of anyone. Additionally, as noted in his introduction, trouble seems to follow wherever he goes, as he rarely enters a room without making at least one notable remark. He thrives in a group setting and can easily get along with just about anyone, however whether or not he can actively maintain these connections is a different story.
Kai will often go into things without a plan. He finds he works better if he improvises a solution in the moment rather than if he meticulously plans out his next move. While this works best in fast-paced moments that require quick thinking, if he goes in without realizing all the details of a situation he could easily get himself into trouble and jeopardize the state of his team. This makes Kai seem reckless or oblivious, especially if what he’s doing seems nonsensical to an outside perspective.
However, Kai is also incredibly creative because of his unpredictable nature. His quick wit not only makes him excellent in conversations, but also makes him good at making things with his hands. He has a deep fascination with sensory objects especially, such as rocks, which he later builds a dedicated collection for. His creativity also helps him to find unconventional solutions to problems in a short time frame, which is incredibly useful when otherwise “obvious” solutions are lost on others around him.
However, his sporadic nature also enables Kai to have some…interesting ideas. Mixing with his humor he can create ridiculous things such as “The Kmirk”, which is just what he calls the ridiculous smirk he always does. The name is quite literally just the word “smirk” with his first initial replacing the s, but for some reason he finds this minor change to justify the existence of the word entirely. Examples like these are…confusing to basically anyone who interacts with him for the first time, but after a while there is a certain charm to his ideas, even if they are a bit hard to wrap your head around at first.
A common misconception many can have about Kai is that his humor is inherently malicious. It’s easy to see him as just another “douchebag funny guy” who thinks mocking others is funny, but practically all of his humor is rooted in light-hearted teasing rather than genuine rips into people’s characters. When he jokes around, it isn’t meant to hurt the other party, but to engage with them. He pulls back the moment his advances cause discomfort, as after all, what’s the fun in making someone you like upset?
Additionally, despite the initial more humorous mask he presents to people, Kai tries to be sincere with the people he loves. Though he will often slip a few jokes in-between, if his friends need reassurance he will be more than happy to provide. It may seem like he doesn’t care because of his more playful antics, but he has the ability to be serious and give genuinely helpful advice when given the chance to. Despite his own claims that he is “useless” in comparison to the other members of the WOP, his gentle advice and wise words often help bring even the “strongest” members out of their toughest times.
Most of Kai’s key points of learning throughout the story is to not only realize his own strengths and worth, but also to tackle his fear of abandonment. It should be obvious by now that Kai’s insecurities are abundant. Though he hides them via his humor and social nature, he has a deep nagging fear of abandonment. Every relationship, no matter how fulfilling, he fears is temporary. Kai feels he’s worthless if he can’t entertain, so he does everything in his power not to let the mask slip. The moment it does, then everyone will see how disposable he really is, and leave him all alone. The thought of that terrifies him.
Kai’s comedy is both an affirmation he won’t be left behind and a way for him to hide his insecurities. He has an ingrained idea that he is set for failure and unable to succeed because of how his intelligence has been treated in the past. He’s been made to feel incompetent or stupid simply for learning differently, or even being good at different things. Now, with the warriors, he finally has a stable source of friendship that won’t leave him at a moment's notice, and sees him for more than just how he can entertain them.
This is especially true with the trio Kai makes with Jack and Phoenix later on in the story, Trouble Club. The three of them, having an even stronger bond than the already strong bond between the warriors, give Kai the stability and acceptance he needs to not have to fear being alone. This especially applies because both Phoenix and Jack also struggled in school, so they can relate to Kai’s own insecurities and help reassure him. By having people who are like him and are not considered “failures” by default, Kai is able to readjust his own self worth and apply more healthy standards by looking at what he can do rather than what he cannot.
Another one of his teammates, Nate, also helps with this. Though Kai loves to tease him, they both harbor a lot of respect for each other. Nate’s intense loyalty already helps push back Kai’s fears as is, but Nate’s additional status as a “hard-working student” helps Kai see his own strengths in contrast to what they should “traditionally” be like. Although the idea of Kai being placed next to someone who is much more cautious and “rational” seems like it’d be counterproductive, in reality, because of Nate’s tendency to overthink and plan ahead it can actually hinder the team in battle. Being able to see the drawbacks of the expectation of what Kai is “supposed” to be like allows him to note his own strengths in contrast, and have those said strengths admired by someone who normally would be pitted against him instead of viewed as an equal.
Kai has felt disposable his entire life, but now, with the warriors by his side, he’ll be able to see how much he means to every single member and most of all, see how much he has to offer beyond his comedic facade.
| 🧨 ACT 1
── ⋅ ── ♤ ── ⋅ ──
Kai starts out Act 1 right at the crux of yet another lost friendship. When the main events of the story kick off, Kai is trying his best to bounce back from this loss by adjusting and becoming comfortable with all of the members of the WOP. He embraces the new opportunities the journey provides, and is curious to see how this sudden new development will play out.
Kai has spent his entire life thinking that he was inherently doomed for failure, so the idea of him fulfilling a “prophecy” that only some special chosen few could is something that he wouldn’t imagine otherwise. This and the fact he technically has nothing left to lose now on Armonia makes him much more accepting of the tasks at hand and more willing to see it through.
Kai’s main learning point in Act 1 is to learn how to maintain healthy and stable relationships. Kai is used to the constant cycle of joining and leaving friend groups, so the fact he’s now in a group that requires him to have a strong bond with each member to work as a unit gives him the chance to know what an actual stable friendship is like. This helps Kai see his worth outside of just his comedy and ease his fears of being abandoned.
This also helps Kai understand and help a lot of his teammates on a deeper level, having a stronger bond with them also means he can be less jokey and more serious with them when necessary and actually have people to confide in when he’s struggling. One example of someone Kai grows closer to throughout Act 1 is Victor, who becomes one of his best friends. Back on Armonia, Kai would have a hard time getting close to Victor combined to his life circumstance and more introverted demeanor, but now in a group setting the two can get along and have a deeper relationship with one another than if they met back on Armonia.

The fact Nate rarely gets close to anyone paired with his intense loyalty also helps calm Kai’s fears of being left behind. Nate also starts to open up to Kai which allows Kai to finally get a glimpse into a kinder, more gentle side to Nate. Even with his harsher exterior, it seems Kai is finally making his way into Nate’s heart. Who knows, maybe even Nate is working his way into Kai’s too…

He has a fascination with and actively collects rocks. He even builds a rock collection where he bases each rock off members of the WOP and the people they encounter.
In previous versions of Bewilthred, his symbol was a Target/Sphere.
“The Kmirk” actually came from an old conversation I had with one of my friends. I made it canon because it felt in character and also it was very funny.
Back in 2020 I had this running joke where he was obsessed with toasters. This no longer applies but maybe one day when Bewilthred’s more close to completion I’ll release the Secret Scrapped Toaster Scenes.
Additionally, there was an old running joke I had where he had a youtube channel called “The_Kaister42069” or something like that, where the whole channel premise was just Kai messing with toasters and Victor running in to stop him. It was funny. Not canon anymore either but funny.
In the original Bewilthred plot outline (from 2017-2018) he was named Karma, YES. I KNOW. LAUGH.
In the original Bewilthred plot outline (from 2017-2018) he was an escaped lab experiment with tentacle powers. Don’t trust an 11 year old to write an OC okay it never ends well.
His favorite food is pasta…hmm…wonder why that is…
