| 🕊️ Introduction

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

Hanabi Furukawa is a deuteragonist of Bewilthred. Humble, polite, and eloquent, Hanabi is both the guide for the Warriors of Peace and Peace’s right hand man. He’s dedicated his life to helping Peace maintain balance, and that shows in his diligence and efficiency. However, he also cares deeply about each and every one of the warrior’s. Though his tagging along on the journey was initially just part of his job, he not only becomes their primary mentor, but he grows a deep parental fondness for each of them, which is unfortunate considering the constant peril the warriors put themselves in.

However, Hanabi has some skeletons in his closet. His fatal flaw once was letting his vision of how things could be obscure the things he had right in front of them. If he let that happen again with the warriors, he would never forgive himself. He has to make things right, somehow, but he just didn’t know how.

…If only he could talk to a certain person one last time. If he had a chance to explain himself, he’d finally forgive himself at last.

…Wouldn’t he?

| 🕊️ Before The Story

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

A common misconception about the Keepers is that they can create life. Given their positions in the universe, it is a reasonable yet misguided assumption. The reality is that most beings in the universe originated from a spark of complete chance. The first living things in the universe (besides basic bacteria and what not) would become known as “wanderers”. They have this name for their nature of wandering about from planet to planet. They used universal rifts, which were commonplace considering the widespread instability in the newly formed universe. Hanabi was one of these wanderers. It’s likely he came into existence from some stray universal essence interacting with a very early colony of beetles, thus making him resemble one. However, the exact origins of his creation have never been clear to him, as is typical for most naturally born eternals.

Unlike eternals created by Chaos, Hanabi was naturally made to go through his existence in this state. His perception of things like time are adjusted in order to keep him from going completely insane considering the many years he has lived. Additionally, his mental/physical development adjusts based on emotional milestones rather than biological ones. The most notable feature of all eternals is their immortality. So, for the first few years of Hanabi’s life, he simply wandered from planet to planet hoping to find a deeper meaning to his existence. If he got lucky, maybe he would find someone who was in a similar situation as him.

…And lucky he was! On one fateful expedition, he encountered another being unlike anything he’d ever seen before. Were they a dragon? A goat? Hanabi didn’t know, but their strong beast-like appearance intrigued them into knowing their story. When asked for their name, the individual simply responded that they went by “Eira”. While initially startled from the encounter, the two got to talking and decided that it’d stupid venturing alone. Eira’s situation unsurprisingly mimicked Hanabi’s, so they were able to click immediately. Together, the two of them could find meaning in their existence. So, from that day on, the two became friends. More than friends even. They’d be companions until the end of time.

Would be companions. Of course, that guarantee slipped from the picture once Peace entered it.

While navigating a particularly interesting set of rifts, Hanabi and Eira accidentally found their way onto a planet known as Quescillia. After investigating a palace-like building, they found The Keeper of Life and Order, Peace. Since this was early on in the universe's inception, it took Peace for quite a loop when two random individuals somehow ended up on her doorstep. After explaining who they were and how they got to Quescilia, Peace in turn explained some simple facts about the universe they lived in and made Hanabi an offer to help him find a meaning in this life. Together, they could help maintain balance of the force of Order and preserve life itself.

Eira cautioned Hanabi against taking the offer, but he’d already jumped at taking it before Peace finished outlining the terms. This was exactly the purpose Hanabi was looking to find. If he could help in understanding life in this world and especially preserve it for hundreds of years to come, well he’d be as satisfied as he could be with his existence. Seeing that Hanabi clearly wasn’t going to budge on taking up Peace’s offer, it didn’t take much convincing for Eira to realize they were not going to be considered in this decision. Hanabi did convince Peace to let Eira join with a position as well, but Eira was about as hesitant to take it as Peace was offering it. From then on, Hanabi became Peace’s second in command whilst Eira became one of the first to join Peace’s army.

As a demonstration of Peace’s appreciation and trust, Hanabi was offered the opportunity of obtaining a symbol. Like he did before, Hanabi negotiated to bring Eira into the mix. This led to the creation of their dual symbol. Hanabi’s half, a wisp, and Eira’s half, a horn, would make together a circle. A true showcase of how the two completed each other through and through. They were companions until the end of time, weren’t they?

…“Companions until the end of time”. Well, with this decision they had made, time was sure closing on them fast.

Years would pass, The Universal War would start. As conflicts between Peace and Chaos intensified, so did the rift between Hanabi and Eira. As Hanabi sunk more and more of his time into his work with Peace, he and Eira had less and less time to spend with one another. It didn’t help that Peace harbored a dislike for Eira which spread to the rest of Peace’s court. Eira’s strength and appearance contributed to their perception as a “monstrous” individual. That plus their close relationship with Hanabi, who was clearly Peace’s favorite, was the perfect recipe for jealousy and resentment. You could even theorize that part of this dislike stemmed from Eira’s resemblance to Chaos. Whatever the true reason, Eira was alone again.

The time Eira tried to spend with Hanabi was continuously snubbed from them. Even though Hanabi tried at first to continue making room for them in their life, as they ranked up it became apparent that work was Hanabi’s new purpose. Eira began to become self-conscious, was it something they’d done to have pushed Hanabi away? The only solution they could find for their complicated cocktail of emotions would be to repress them entirely or focus them all into their training. If everyone insisted they were a beast, fine, so be it. Let them be one. But they were taking that name on their own terms. Eira was perfectly fine with letting things slip and erode, until Hanabi confronted them.

Hanabi, who had caught on by now the change in Eira’s demeanor towards him, questioned why they were so upset. Hanabi believed he was just doing what he had already promised he’d do, and he didn’t understand why Eira was pushing them away. Ironic, considering Hanabi’s neglect is part of what forced Eira’s hand in the first place. This resentful sentiment snowballed into a larger argument. The topic went from their distance, to their views on Peace, and of course from there the blame game started. Hanabi called Eira selfish, this was Hanabi’s whole life, they couldn’t just put away their work for them. Eira spat back that Hanabi had abandoned them, Hanabi was their only friend, and they had essentially forgotten all about them.

As the fight intensified however, some residents of Peace’s court caught wind of it. Informing Peace of the dispute, she became furious at what Eira had said about her and what the two had done. Of course, with all of her court watching, she had to make an example. She maintains the force of Order, after all. What else to prove that than to snub out a signifier of the enemy they were doing everything to oppose.

Peace exiled Eira. A decision made as quickly as it was administered. The biggest tragedy of all? Hanabi sat there and watched. His fear took over his judgement, and just like that, “companions forever” became but a naive pipe dream.

Now the two were truly alone. Forever.

…That is, until the Warriors come into the picture.

| 🕊️ Act 1

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

After the death of Chaos which marked the end of The Universal War, Hanabi was officially on his own. He had Peace still, of course, but Hanabi’s previous optimism on righting the wrongs of the world had diminished a fair amount when finally seeing what it truly had to offer. Peace taught him the way the world was, and while their relationship used to be one of mutual learning and trust, once Eira was gone so was any true trust between the two. That along with Peace’s increase in self-sabotaging behaviors for the sake of maintaining “order” put their relationship down a tumultuous path.

Hanabi’s existence post-Eira was punctuated with waves of deep remorse. He couldn’t help but feel ashamed of what he’d done. He had failed the person he trusted with his life. Part of himself was now lost, forever, and he didn’t have anyone but himself to blame for how things turned out. Sure, Hanabi found a “purpose”, but he lost what truly mattered to him. What kind of a life could he live with that notion always looming in the back of his mind? If only he could explain himself to them, that’d at least make this hurt less…

…Hanabi didn’t have time to ruminate on that, though. The pieces of Chaos’s court reformed into the organization “Omne”, and they certainly were not pleased with the results of the war. Additionally, as Peace began to have nightmarish visions of a future where the universe would collapse in on itself and die, it became obvious they’d have to seek Divinity’s help in order to understand what it all meant. This confrontation led to a fortune that became known as the “Divine Prophecy”. Divinity foretold that on an annual riftening, seven warriors were fated to fall through wormhole after wormhole in the hopes they’d come together to stop Omne once and for all. This simple fable became the faith Peace needed to continue her mission despite Omne’s threats.

More years would pass. Conflicts ebbed and flowed. The scale of balance tipped in one direction, then another. With Peace’s weakening state, the universe would need a miracle in order to keep itself together. That was the thought that wavered through Hanabi’s mind as he tended to Quescilia’s gardens as he usually did to clear his head…

…Unfortunately for him though, another thing went straight for it. Word to the wise, being ambushed by a teenager is NOT fun. It was the situation Hanabi was put in however when he got to meet the fated “Warriors” for the very first time. Unaware of who they were at first, he presumed that their arrival was just a convenient accident. Of course, all seven of these individuals ignored Hanabi's explanations and ran right to the big pretty palace-like building waiting for them. After meeting Peace, the warriors learned of the Divine Prophecy and Peace assigned Hanabi to help guide them throughout their journey.

If he could do anything to change what he’d done, maybe he could teach these new “warriors” to do better than he had done. Maybe he could help ensure the seven of them would truly remain companions, even in the toughest of times. That would become his new purpose.

With his guidance, he was sure he could help the warriors figure out who they were meant to be.

| 🕊️ Act 2

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

Imagine this. You have just gone through the most traumatizing mission of your entire life. You barely make it out with your found family group of misfit teenagers and even snagged their incapacitated ex-enemy (could you call it ex…? I mean they definitely aren’t full on enemies now) as a bonus. The ship you are on is about to run out of fuel, so you decide to land at the nearest planet hoping to find some sort of respite. “Koriama” it’s called. It sounds familiar, but you don’t remember why.

When you arrive, you see a house nearby. Of course, considering the state everyone’s in, it would be stupid not to ask for sanctuary. What other choice is there, really? So you go up to this house, knock on the door, and ask for shelter.

Now imagine that door opening, and the person behind that door is Eira Morozov, your estranged best friend. They take one look at you, take a moment to process you in front of them, and have the simplest response possible.

“No.”

And they shut the door.

…Your name is Hanabi Furukawa. What the hell is going on?

| ☁️ Introduction

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

On first impression, Hanabi is humble, polite, and eloquent. He is, quite literally, an old soul. He carries himself with a refined demeanor. Even in the most aggressive of combat he prioritizes manners and striking back with wit, not force. Hanabi carries an appetite for education, he loves learning all about the nuances of existence in the universe. No matter how much time has passed, nothing can extinguish the burning curiosity and passion he carries for his job.

While cheerful and optimistic, Hanabi also knows when to ground himself in reality if necessary. He’s definitely a dreamer, but if a situation is dire he won’t be the last to recognize it. Hanabi is also a pacifist at heart. He does everything in his power to prevent a conflict if he can. To him, the best resolution is through words. He takes Peace’s upkeep of order very seriously, and that includes in the most minute instances.

Hanabi’s now well-known maturity didn’t come from nowhere, of course. When he was younger, he was incredibly ignorant to the way the world was. He lacked the bigger picture, narrowed into a specific path and lost sight of what was most important to him. He dreamt of things bigger than himself, but those aspirations led to him not appreciating what he already had. Being hooked on the future, the what “could be” rather than the “what is" was his first mistake in losing someone who was once incredibly dear to him. He refuses to let such ignorance take hold of him again.

Most of Hanabi’s actions carry an undercurrent of guilt to them. Part of why he is so enthusiastic about guiding the Warriors is because he wants them to avoid making the same mistakes he did. He sees their tight bond and their potential for truly changing something in the universe, and if he’s going to make up for his past mistakes somehow, he’d want it to be this. Even if he ends up “babysitting” them most of the time whilst dealing with their digs at his age, he wants the best for them. Truly. They’re the closest he has to family, and he is not letting himself lose any semblance of that again. Not after what happened last time.

Hopefully, through the warriors, he can make up for his mistakes. Help them learn from him, and perhaps even forgive himself once and for all.

| ☁️ ACT 1

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

Hanabi’s personality is pretty similar as described prior as it is in Act 1. Most of Hanabi’s focal points of growth during this part of the story is being able to come to terms with some aspects of his intense guilt complex and paving a better life with the warriors by his side. Additionally, Hanabi is forced to confront aspects of his relationship with Peace and begin to understand some of the errors of her ways as well.

Hanabi doesn’t have a lot of fluctuating development beyond what is already described in his overview/introduction because he is essentially the grounding character for most of the warriors to rely on. However, the main crux of his development comes after he can finally face his biggest regret head on in Act 2. It is a bit spoilery though, so be warned of that before going in!

| 🕊️ Act 2

── ⋅ ── 𓄼 ── ⋅ ──

During Act 2, Hanabi is forced to face the person he has wronged the most in his life, Eira. While Eira obviously does not want to share a space with the person who had abandoned and betrayed them at first, Eira’s empathy towards the warrior's situation made it so Hanabi could stay on a strict but simple condition. No talking one-on-one. Group conversations would be inevitable, but outside of the warriors, Eira doesn’t want to know a thing about Hanabi ever again.

Of course…these conditions loosen a bit once Eira realizes the warriors each possess a symbol and has to work with Hanabi in order to teach them how to tap into them properly. Hell, even after some brief Omne encounters, Hanabi begins to believe Eira and him are finally reconnecting again. A flicker of hope lights up in Hanabi’s heart, reaching out for the chance to finally make up for what he had done. He could explain himself at last! If he could gain Eira’s forgiveness, it’d fix everything, wouldn’t it?

…However, the most important lesson Hanabi has to learn in reconnecting with Eira is that he is not owed their forgiveness. Just as quickly as they start to connect again, the same patterns begin to arise once more. Boundaries get crossed, past wounds forgotten, and Eira is right back to believing Hanabi can’t be trusted. Things even get to a point where Eira tries to leave the warriors to continue their journey without them, as to not allow their tension with Hanabi to interfere with their mission. The warriors obviously protest this and push the two to communicate and resolve things properly. Not with a sweeping of the past under the rug, but by acknowledging the hurt and finally understanding the other side.

The truth is, Hanabi never needed Eira to forgive him in order for him to move on. “Explaining himself” was just a defense to remove his participation in the whole thing. When he finally recognizes his complacency for what it was, and is able to reassure Eira that none of this was ever their fault, he finally finds peace. Forgiveness was never the key, accountability was. By taking responsibility for his own inaction, Hanabi is able to truly progress and learn from what he has done.

And by taking responsibility, Hanabi allows Eira to reach out a hand to trust them again. Could they be the way they used to be? No, never. But they could try something new.

Maybe “Companions until the end of time” wasn’t such a pipe dream after all.

🕊️ personality

Complicated.

xxxx

Eira and Hanabi, like their symbols, are two parts of the same whole. Their history with one another is deep and tragic. You could’ve called them soulmates, at least before Peace came into the picture. When she did, the two began to drift apart, eventually ending in an explosive end to their relationship that ended with Eira exiled and Hanabi getting the “purpose” he was looking for. Hanabi spends many years harboring deep guilt about what happened with Eira, and Eira reasonably resents Hanabi for what they’d done. If they could meet again, could they fix what has been broken? Or would that only tear them further apart. With the Warriors at least, the changes coming their way are far from predictable.
(Mild Spoilers for Act 2)

Eira and Hanabi reunite in Act 2, though admittedly not under the best circumstances. After Eira takes the warriors in, they initially make a point to remove themselves from Hanabi as much as possible. Eventually though, the two begin slowly talking bit by bit again. For a moment, it seemed as if things were finally being repaired. Of course, though, as Hanabi jumps to call Eira their “friend” in a confrontation with the Omne Founders, it throws Eira for a loop. After Eira tries to leave the warriors so as to not interfere with their relationship with Hanabi, the two are finally forced to talk about what had happened all those years ago. Once Hanabi is able to finally take accountability for his actions, and Eira is properly able to explain their hurt, the two see each other again and last and start to love one another again. They couldn’t be the same way as before, but they could make something new. They’re older and wiser now, this time perhaps they could love each other as they wanted at last.
VERY Complicated.

xxxx

Peace and Hanabi have a…complicated relationship, to say the least. What once was a mutual bond of learning about the world around them has evolved into a messy situation where both parties understand the other more intimately than they’d like to admit. Hanabi knows of Peace’s many faults, but he can also see the good in her. He sees that despite her mechanical worldview, there is a part of her that if removed from this position would be able to live a life at last. It hurts him, really, to see her self-sabotage for the sake of “order”. Why should she have to suffer? There has to be another way. It doesn’t help that she’s made others suffer for those actions too. For Peace, Hanabi carries a heartache like no other. If Eira was meant to be Peace’s Beast, Hanabi is Peace’s fool. He will be persuaded by her white lies until the day he dies. Or, at least until someone comes along and makes a change to the way the world is. Maybe then the both of them could get themselves a proper vacation day.

He’s based on horned beetles! Certified little creature.

His original symbol was a question mark. For some reason.

There have been debates about the texture of his skin. Soft or hard? You decide.

The warriors constantly call him old as a joke, but never do the same to Eira despite them both being the same age. #STOPHANABIHATRED!!!

Like most eternals, he can generate a mouth to eat. It’s scary.

He is the shortest out of the entire main cast

Hanabi and Eira’s horns are inverses of one another!
