TOYHOUSE IMPORTING!

Tutorial Resource :3

IMPORTING CODES FROM TOYHOUSE (TUTORIAL/RESOURCE)

HI HELLO! Recently, I did a very big move for the Bewilthred side of my website and I uploaded EVERYONES CHARACTER BIOS HERE!! YAAAAY! Isn’t that great! However, doing so made me realize I could potentially help others who are trying to import code from toyhouse to Neocities, especially if they’re a beginner and/or have a ton of stuff on there like I do! This honestly is a little less like a tutorial and more of a resource but regardless! I still thought it’d be good to share!

Huge notice beforehand though: I am a VERY amateur webmaster. Most of what I do is just me sticking things together and praying it works. If anyone is MUCH more skilled than me feel free to make a better version of this resource, I encourage it even! I’m just sharing what I’ve currently got :3

While I haven’t tested this on other webhosting providers, I’m pretty confident the methodology is similar so even if you’re a nekoweb user or self-hosting I think you’ll find use in this as well! Anyways…let’s get into it!

HELP!!!! MY CODE BREAKS WHEN I PUT IT IN NEOCITIES!!!!

This is probably the immediate reaction you have if you’re importing toyhouse HTML plainly into Neocities (or your other webhosting source of choice). Let me explain why this likely happens:

1. Bootstrap

Toyhouse as a whole uses the Bootstrap framework, which is described as “A free front-end framework that uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to help developers build responsive, mobile-first websites quickly.”. This means that without that framework, a lot of things will break when importing from Toyhouse to Neocities, because a blank website doesn’t have that framework! So that’s part of what you need to do first. Luckily, importing Bootstrap is extremely easy. While you can look on their website for more information, just know the method I use for importing Bootstrap is usually installing it via CDN, which basically just means you insert the two pieces into your head and body of your HTML!

With Bootstrap installed, things should be looking a lot nicer! However, there are some other things to keep in mind, such as:

2. Toyhouses Style Sheet

Again, if you’re using a bootstrap colored code, Toyhouse’s specific theming for those bootstrap colors will not come built in with the bootstrap framework as it’s in Toyhouse’s external style sheet. Luckily, Toyhouse is open sourced to my knowledge, and I was able to get the style sheet for it with the help of Circlejourney’s Toyhouse Editor, which uses it as well! It will be attached in the template file I will provide at the end.

In the template file as well, keep in mind that while the default theme is the teal theme, the pink theme also seems to work! The other themes I sadly have not found a reliable switch for them just yet. I’ll update if this changes.

3. Font-Awesome

If you have a supporter/old Neocities account, you can import FontAwesome as an external script to get those icons to work, however if you do not have it you’ll likely have to go through and replace them yourself. I recommend using unicode symbols as replacements, but do whatever you wish! Make em glittery images if you want…go nuts!

4. Scripts

You’ll need Jquery in order for certain features to work. In the HTML file I provide there are other scripts such as modals as well that help certain features run also. For example, without these scripts the accordians on my character bios functioned as regular links. I can’t tell you too much of the specifics, I very much just ripped these out and made them work but if the shoe fits…

…and I think thats it, yeah! That’s literally all you need to import Toyhouse codes to your static site host of choice LOL. At least to my knowledge. However there are some other things I want to go over that are less about how to do it but rather more on how to do so ethically!

DON’T BE A JERK WITH THIS…PLEASE…

I am trusting that most if not all reading this have good intentions, but in case it needs to be said, please do not use toyhouse codes from users who do not allow for them to redistributed off-site. Seriously. It’s just really rude to do, respect the creators wishes! Additionally, if you are uncertain you should try to reach out before implementing anything onto your website. I know it’s scary as hell to reach out to people BUT! Who knows! You might learn a thing or two! Or you might even make a new friend! The world is crazy man.

Second of all, GIVE CREDIT WHERE ITS DUE! If you are gonna use someone elses toyhouse code on your personal website, the least you can do is link back to the original source! I also recommend mentioning that you are sourcing from Toyhouse as you are going to be using various resources of theirs!

And finally….HAVE FUN!!! Please use this knowledge to flesh out your websites especially if you’ve wanted to bring over character stuff from Toyhouse. I think everyone should have a backup/archive of their stuff and having your own personal website is a great way to do it! And with sites like Neocities, it’s completely free! So why not give it a try?

BUT YEAH! That’s all I have to say…now let’s get to what you probably want most of all LOL.

THE ACTUAL DANG RESOURCE!!!

Below is the Toyhouse Import Template I have created for you, it’s got everything I explained (excluding font-awesome as thats on a case to case basis) and everything I mentioned is also labelled in case you forget LOL. Use this wisely please! Now go forth….and import all the toyhouse codes your heart desires…

Thank you sososo much for reading, if you end up finding any use in this PLEASE let me know! Have a lovely day!
